MANTON: shawl, diminutive mantoncillo or pico
ENREJADO: the knotted fringes that embelish the mantón and mantoncillo.
- Full name would be mantón de Manila, it is a very large hand embroidered shawl, with mostly flower motifs. Very expensive and unique. Many are collectors items. The better and more knotting, enrejado, it has the heavier and expensive it becomes.
- Mantones are used for parties and special occasions.
- Dancers use mantones like a bullfighter uses his cape.
- For feria, however, ladies wear a small shawl with, of without embroidery, called mantoncillo. Sometimes also called pico because it forms a peak, or pico, it is cut in a triangular shape, hence it has a pico, small peak.
- For a long time, mantoncillos were simple, made of solid colors and fringes matching or contrasting the color of the dress.
- Depending on the dress style, mantoncillos can be made of practically any material, from silk to velvet, from lace to patchwork.
- Changing your flower and your mantón, is an inexpensive way to update the look of a dress.
- The length of fringes changes with fashion. In the recent years, fringes reached almost floor length. Now they are much shorter.
- You don't have to wear a mantoncillo. Many of the dress styles are so ornate that you don't need one.
