 We Love Flamenco 2019

You know that spring is fast approaching in the south of Spain when you see an explosion of colors and ruffles.  The first fashion show(s) for feria presented us with designs evoking mother earth and cosmic vibes.  There were many romantic and classic styles too.  New this year, were dresses with geometric patterns, lines, triangles, houndstooth, and of course dots, huge dots!

Dresses by designer Mónica Méndez showed us big bold dots over jewel tones.  These were some of my favorites.  They were classic with a modern twist, most had v necklines, but a few caught my attention with high necks covered with lots of chockers.  Just beautiful.

Other shows presented us with very simple dresses and skirts with just a single ruffle swirling up the dress.  Very elegant and refreshing.  Ladies, this year there are lots of skirts, which is great news if you are worried about your outfit on your instagram feed, change the blouse and you have a new look. Problem solved.

Spotted many floral dresses, very romantic, like a Botticelli painting. I even think some had empress waistlines.

For the graphic dresses, designers used flowers and polka dots, to balance the lines on them.

There were monochromatic dresses, white on white dots, and black on black dots.  Everything but boring.  Skirt lengths were pretty much the same as other years, above the shoe and ruffles came in many shapes and sizes.  However, the skirts seemed looser (still tight, but less) allowing for easier movement and more comfort.

Shawls were present in some shows, but they weren't the main accessory.  The show stoppers were the extra large ones, saved for special occasions and weddings.  Accessories are big, layered, evoking summer, corals, like a Sicilian vacation or an Italian summer.  Others fantasized with yesterday's Cuba and its people, some dresses brought memories of  "Celia Cruz", the uber salsa queen.  One in particular design, a model all in white from head to toe, transported me to the city of Miami, where many times I have seen these Cuban ladies, head wraps and long dresses in white, by the beach, with offerings to the water Gods.

I leave you here with Pol Nuñdz fashion show at We Love Flamenco 2019 in Seville.

Fashion Recap for Feria 2015

Less than two weeks for the first big Feria of the Season - Sevilla - After sitting in several fashion shows, and scoping the windows of almost all Flamenca stores in Sevilla and Jerez...

I can say that solid colors are big, especially yellow.

Yellow in SIMOF 2015

Black, red and polka dots are always in style, but classic dots weren't the main focus at the fashion show.  Don't worry you can't go wrong with classic polka dots.

Sonia e Isabelle does wonders with dots and lace.  Two piece outfit.

The introduction of gold in almost all the accessories, and on dresses too, gold prints, like Gustav Klimt.  Accessories should not be too shiny, just antique gold.

I think "El Dorado" is here in Sevilla.

Gold Print dress, SIMOF Seville

Bright colors as well as muted, pastels colors are the choice for this year's dresses, but not fluorescent or neon colors, so toss it out, it is probably too old (several years too old) to wear it again.

Muted , soft colors, far from boring

Flower prints are still very big, yes those grandma prints, that somehow look so wonderful in a Flamenca dress or skirt.

Embroidered shawls with smaller fringes are what a plain pastel dress needs.

One plain rose is a classic, but flower bunches, prairie flowers, hydrangeas and carnations are very big this year.  Some designers have introduced gold flowers that work really well with the gold prints.

Lace tops are big, in sexy black or red for a very modern look, and the classic white or off white, go really well with the floral vintage style skirts.

Lace and baby Jesus!  Love it.

Sleeves, please, please please, wear sleeves.  Dresses are so elegant with sleeves.  The ruffles are bigger, the sleeves wider, it really makes a big difference. So wear sleeves, please.

Sleeves add volume and interest to the outfit

This sleeve works well with the outfit, it balances proportions of a very ornate skirt

You can really do wonderful things with a sleeve

Accessories, earrings and combs, are very colorful, don't be shy and just wear one, wear many.  If you don't feel comfortable with huge flowers and combs, use many baby combs and flowers all over the head for maximum impact without feeling like the "crazy flower lady".

Hair is still up and polished, not every hair in its place but a bun is the style. It is classic, and goes well with all dress styles.

Barbie - ¡Que Guapa!

Barbie You Look Stunning!

This past february, the Mercedes Benz Flamenca fashion show in Jerez, took place in the beautiful Bodegas of Tio Pepe.  Besides the real fashion show, there was a special guest invited to the event.  It  was Barbie, Barbie and her friends. With the most amazing outfits for Feria.
More than 400 Barbies and friends were dressed in Flamenca, gala dresses, gypsy dresses, bullfighter suit of lights, even the Duchess of Alba's doll was invited to Barbie's party.  Barbie wore her hair up, wore large earrings, and a peineta, big hair comb, with roses adorning her hair. Not one single detail was missing.

I thought the dolls were amazing, and not just me, most visitors where amazed at the true to life depiction of Andalusian culture throughout the many festivities celebrated in Andalusia.  There was the bullfight in Sevilla, Feria, gypsies singing in the caves of Sacromonte Granada, the Rocio pilgrimage to Ayamonte, a flamenco show at a bodega, and the fashion show in Jerez…
Elegant Ken wearing a suit of Light. "traje de luces"

You could almost hear the crowd cheering the bullfighters leaving the bullring
a glass of good Sherry to celebrate the event, and then dancing, singing and guitar playing.

I asked if the dresses were on sale, just one, Tio Pepe's uniform, the emblematic red jacket with black skirt. €80!

Feria!

Barbie never looked better.  She is even wearing a "Mantón de Manila" spanish shawl.
Will they bring back the Barbie exhibit or take it to other Fashion shows, next year or even a museum? No one knows. Lets hope it does return next February, so we have a chance to see it one more time.
